The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of a few weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to construct it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and recently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to observe the chief executive seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed over the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of hostility who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding of him since they are atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler arising; rather, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for others, particularly for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the attacker; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your jacket you should give him your sweater also.
The evident and direct fact that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a kind of extreme compassion centered on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was contained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Best of Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to see the persistent defiance against Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.
